Glass Lamp Shades

My first encounter with glass lamp shades was in a restaurant.


Every year at Christmas, my colleagues would gather at a venue for a social evening to celebrate the season. This particular year we chose to indulge ourselves with an expensive meal at an exclusive restaurant.

As you can imagine, everything about the decor was selected to provide an environment of good taste and opulence. The starched tablecloths were of the best linen, the cutlery were in highly polished silver and the floors were covered handmade carpets that didn’t deserve to be walked on.

Each table had in the centre a small lamp that was topped in a tiffany glass lamp shade. Every one was different and their combined effect was a myriad of colors each under lit with a soft glow. For the duration of the meal my eyes were drawn to the piece that held center place on our table. I was enthralled by its magnificence. It was as if all the stained glass windows of St Peter’s Cathedral had been captured and condensed into this single work of art.

Since then, interest in glass lamp shades has become firmly established. I set about collecting them for my own home. There is a lamp shade created for every room in a house. You can go for large and brazen in the hallway or sitting room or small and understated in the bathroom.
